about this item

Originating in a visit to Leiden in 2013, Crone, in this second volume, focuses on the effect of Iranians distinctiveness and looks at Iranian religious trends both before and after the arrival of Islam. She considers Iran as the Iranian cultural area that includes Iraq in the west and Transoxania (current Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan) in the east. The region had a religious and cultural legacy far removed from that of traditionalist Islam and Iranians also had a much stronger sense of continuity with their pre-Islamic past than did other conquered people.
