JanSport Big Student 17.5" Backpack

This is our second Jansport for our 8 year old daughter. It holds all of her stuff for school and then uses for camp during the summer.

Always thought Jansport was sturdy, but this backpack broke the second week of school. In order to honor warranty, Jansport wants me to mail the backpack and wait six weeks. My kid needs his backpack for school.

My high schooler bought this backpack two years in a row. It’s big enough for a Chromebook and all the high school books. Great color and durable! It lasted one school year with heavy wear and tear.

I had my reservations about the water bottle mesh pocket when I bought this bag for my high schooler but I thought I would give it a chance since the pack itself is exactly what we were looking for. It took only two months of use to prove me right. The bottom of the mesh pocket is not reinforced in any way-just folded over and sewn down. It was never going to last very long. There is now a hole in the bottom of the pocket and it no longer holds a water bottle. I am not even going to send it in to be repaired since I'm assuming they will just sew it down again and it will just break again. The rest if the bag is fine.

Great size for middle school, lots of pockets. Great pattern too, very nice fabric. Jansport always outlasts most other brands in durability.

I bought this Big Student bookbag for my high school sophomore. He was adamant about the Jansport brand and knew right away he wanted Jansport when I told him to pick out a new bookbag. As he said, Jansport is known as "THE bookbag brand." It has two deep main compartments for folders, notebooks, chromebook, binders, text books, etc. Then some smaller compartments for calculator, writing utensils, ear buds, etc. It also has a nice large mesh side pocket that fits a big water bottle. My son is happy with it so far after 1 week of use. As a mom, I have a couple things I noticed and wish were better: 1) it has sort of square corners at the top, so while you pull a zipper up to close the compartment you cannot make one smooth pull up & over to the top middle of the bag--you have to use your other hand to grasp the suare corner to then be able to continue pulling the zipper across the top. So I wish the top was more rounded so you could pull the zipper all the way up and over with one hand in one smooth motion. 2) I wish there was a strap or somethig on the front of the bag for clipping his lunch box. Right now, the lunch box goes inside one of the two large main compartments and fits fine there. However, if teachers pass out more text books that take up space, then where will the lunch box fit? Lunch box could clip onto the bookbag handle, but then it's flopping side to side or is in the way of accessing comparments, so ideally it could clip a little lower down. Last year, with his old bookbag, the lunch box clipped onto and hung from the outside front of the bookbag. So I wonder how that may play out in the future.

My son loves the size and all of the pockets. Goodness gracious, he will be so organized finally.

My daughter loves all the compartments to bag and the feel. We have always had pottery barn bags until this year and she decided to try this one since pottery barn choice was on back order. She says she wishes she would have had Jansport brand and style in prior years! We have converted to Jansport!

We bought my first handout backpack when I was in kindergarten after my first backpack's zipper broke. I chose a rainbow tie dye Big Student that lasted me until started 5th grade, when we sent it in for a checkup before school and they sent it back unrepairable. I was pretty sad, but I quickly found a new Big Student that I have used ever since. The size was perfect, it could hold everything I needed, including my lunchbox, water bottle, computer, binder, music folders, notebooks, and other items. I love the top pocket's easy reach for my pencils, pens and other items I constantly use. The laptop sleeve is large enough for my student laptop in its case, plus a choir folder and another folder for my orchestra music, and papers I get throughout the school day, like homework. My only problem is the mesh, especially the water bottle pocket, which broke after about 2 years when I was in 7th grade. After the bottom of my bottle got smashed over time this year, I decided it was time for a new pack. Currently I'm deciding between the big and cool student, which has everything I want for durability, but lacks a dedicated laptop sleeve, which I am reluctant to abandon because of how useful it has been in junior high. Now I'm about to be in 10th grade, and I'm sure that whatever I get should last me through college, as long as I don't snag any mesh too much (I think it's fair to blame myself for the mesh, I think it started in 5th grade, finally broke all the way in 7th). Anyways, I highly recommend this product for students regardless of age, (it looked huge on me in kindergarten because I'm tiny and still does because I'm the size of a 6th grader) it's a great pack that lasts, and works to hold everything you need. It's worked for me in 10 years of school - I imagine it will continue to do so regardless of which pack I choose. Thank you Jansport for making such an amazing, high quality product despite the decline of quality throughout industries! I will always stick with you guys for my backpacks, and always recommend yours to others!

Very good quality for the price very sturdy and easy to clean

Perfect for school, second time purchasing this brand for mi child.

The size is perfect! My daught is moving up to intermediate school and will be bringing and iPad home everyday. We wanted a backpack with a cup holder and a laptop compartment. This one has both. She is very happy with the design. The quality seems in line with Jansport backpacks.

I love all the pockets and I was looking for a bag that could fit my lunch box and notebooks/files for work and it fits the bill for that order, but it barely fits my laptop that measures 14.7in and while I can zip it up, the corners of my laptop are poking through the top of the bag and I'm concerned eventually through wear and tear they'll rub through.

Love the color and size

I bought one years ago, used it through out high school and college. Then each my sisters used it and passed it down. My dad used it a few years ago for hunting. I turn 40 next year and have been out of high school for over 20 years. I would definitely say it was one of the best and durable back pack I have purchased. Now I'm buying one for both my daughters.
