about this item

Vicari presents this monograph on Japanese film and its analysis of self and ego. The preface and introduction frame the book by posing the problem of Japanese film being analyzed by a Westerner; how much symbolic value could be missed, or misinterpreted, and yet how this puts the foreign observer in the position to absorb truly universal messaging or meta-messaging. Part one traces a cinematic ontology, discovering how cinema involves its viewers so as to create more than just the story depicted, but creating events in the mind and heart of the viewer that resonate according to the viewer's position with respect to Japan and Japanese symbolism. Part two delves into the negative and dissociative nature of identity, contrasting with Western positivism a view of reality in which spaces and potentialities are more real and more definite than what simply happens to be, and particularly how injury and trauma operate in such a world. Part three inspects the distinctively Japanese context of emperor worship, with its extrapolations to more generalizable concepts of masculinity and power, and the way that this shifted and was placed into cultural memory after WWII. The book speaks almost exclusively through a stream of film examples to explore the relationships between Japanese history, Japanese cinema over time, crises of culture and philosophy, and the messages that are broadcast to the Japanese viewer but often also in parallel to the outsider.
