Rolling Stone (4/1/99, p.100) - 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5) - "...the chrome-funk and ice-ballad instrumentals on WHO ELSE are all cut from the familiar wailing fusion cloth of Beck's mid-Seventies beauties....WHO ELSE is a feast of tone color and riff musculature..."
Entertainment Weekly (3/19/99, p.106) - "The techno-rhythm tracks and spacey melodies that threaten to engulf this still-adventurous gutiar hero's work may be dated and just this side of dumb, but few '60s-era ax-men have as much fun extracting outlandish sounds from their instruments as the original Beck..." - Rating: B

This album is original in another new style tending towards Pink Floyd drama, (like Meddle, The Wall), and veering away from jazz influences. The first half features those intense guitar extrapolations and distinctive drum playing with a frenzied ambience. As the album plays out, the Floyd heaviness can get trance--inducing. And towards the latter half, the familiar jazz influences emerge, which have a party--jamming sound and some spacy passages. -- --As usual, Beck's jam--session sections make fans sit up and take notice, and the second half of Who Else! also burns across right past the listener. Going back to the Floydian half for another listen, the roster of Who Else! seems not to be making the pertinent funk affirmations, but making quaint jokes about not observing the approved song structure, which antics should make Genesis fans applaud. -- --But this album is heavier--sounding than the comparisons.
