About this item

Though born to a prosperous bourgeois Jewish family, Scholem spurned his wealthy father's inheritance, and pursued a more rebellious path, says Hoffrogge, joining the socialist Workers' Youth, a Social-Democratic youth organization, in 1912. He traces Scholem's life and work from adolescent years to 1914, World War and revolution to 1918, a rebel at the editing desk and in parliament 1919-24, communism: utopia and apparatus 1921-26, a reluctant defector: Scholem as dissident 1926-28, back to the lecture hall: family and university life in Berlin, and the triumph of barbarism 1933-40. He was shot in the back in Buchenwald concentration camp at age 44. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
