I used it and then went to bed and I did not wake up all night to a WEIRD smell as I would when I used hair dye. there is, of course a smell while you are using it, while it is on your head, but it is not "fumey" and not horrible. You are instructed to wash your hair after rinsing the product out, so that may be why the lingering smell was not strong or bad.

If you have short hair or don't think you'll need to use the whole thing, you can get a separate applicator bottle, mix half of each of the bottles into that, then screw the lids back on and save the other half for another time.
