Description

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% is a prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment. This oil-free, fragrance-free acne treatment contains adapalene gel, a dermatologist recommended retinoid. Retinoids are recommended by dermatologists to help clear and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes. This non-greasy, gel-like texture is quickly absorbed into skin. Dermatologist developed and tested. Suitable for children 12 years and up. If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a doctor before use.
How to Apply: Use once daily. Clean the skin gently and pat dry before applying product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer. For example, if your acne is on the face, apply the product to the entire face. Do not use more than one time a day. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results, but may worsen skin irritation. During the early weeks of use, your acne may appear to worsen before it improves (this is normal); continue use as directed, unless you get irritation that becomes severe. Irritation is more likely to occur in the first few weeks of use or if using more than one topical acne medication at a time but irritation usually lessens with continued use of this product. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results. It may take up to 3 months of once daily use to see results. For further instructions, refer to the Drug Facts on the packaging

Q: My dermatologist recommended this product and while it works, I don't use any products with parabens and I'm hesitant of buying again. Are any of your adapalene products paraben free?

submitted by Cynthia - 1 year ago
  • A: Hello Cynthia! Thank you for your inquiry on La Roche Posay Unscented Effaclar Adapalene Topical Retinoid Oil Free Acne Treatment. We understand your concerns and we appreciate you taking the time to reach out. Parabens are a group of commonly used ingredients that act as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products. They are highly effective in preventing the growth of fungi, bacteria, and yeast that could contaminate and degrade products. As part of our commitment to deliver high-quality, effective products, certain parabens are used in some of our formulations to ensure the safety of our consumers. Extensive research spanning decades has confirmed the parabens in our portfolio are safe at the concentrations we use. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates the personal care industry, upholds these findings. While we take great care in evaluating each ingredient we use and are confident in our products’ safety, we know there is public conversation encouraging consumers to avoid certain ingredients, as is the case with some parabens. Based on growing demand for products that do not include parabens, we substituted them for other preservatives in some of our products. Consumers can look on our products’ labels to see what ingredients are included. Additionally, as part of our innovation strategy we are developing packaging systems and new product formulations that are less vulnerable to microbiological contamination, which will limit the use of preservatives in general. We will continue to take a rigorous approach to product quality and safety, while monitoring consumer insights and preferences.

This product definitely works! I found it to be helpful even outside of treating my acne, it helps with skin texture and anti-aging since it’s a retinol especially if you’re 21 and up. If you don’t want to age badly I also recommend it. It’s unscented and a gel so everyone can use it

This product was a game changer for me. I have normal to dry skin type, and most breakouts were around the bottom half of my face. I use this every other night and my face is 100% clear now and tone is evening out. I tell everyone this is my new favorite product.

Compared to other OTC retinols I have used in the past, this is definitely my favorite. It's drying like all retinols, but with a solid moisturizer on top this stuff has totally changed my skin. Breakouts are minimized within days because of this. Will keep repurchasing.

Has great potential, but ruined my skin barrier

While amazing if used properly, I totally destroyed my skin barrier because I didn’t start off using the product slowly. I enjoyed the results but after a week everything from gentle moisturizer to warm water would burn my face. I think if you start using the product every other day and slowly increase over time then your skin should adjust. If you find your skin burning, the only thing soothing it is aquaphor and the triple moisturizing cream from La roche. Just be cautious and listen to your skin before you overdo it with a retinol.

I’ve only been using it for a week and I’ve noticed immediate results: my acne marks are fading, my complexion is brighter, and I haven’t had any new acne since using this product. Downside: it dries out your skin like crazy! Please use a moisturizer with this and start off slow. (P.S. Check your local TJ Maxx for this! I got it for $14.99.)

Very efficient. My daughter mixed it with moisturizer. The first weeks, some parts of the skin reacted (very dry, reddish). But it disappeared and it was never at the same space. I guess the skin had to adjust to the adapalene. I am glad she persisted. The result is absolutely awesome. She tried another brand but came back to La Roche Posay, the only cream she is comfortable with.

La Roche Posay’s Adapalene cleared my acne. I’m 35 and have struggled with adult acne and scarring since having kids. This product took a good 3 months to see results. I experienced major acne “purging” then the clearest skin I’ve had in years. Give this time, it’s worth the result. And don’t forget to moisturize, it is very drying. I started using this ten months ago and am down to just once a week and I’ve only had one breakout since my skin cleared up 7 months ago. Despite the great acne clearing results, this has done nothing noticeable for my scarring. Otherwise, great product.

Topical retinoids are known for their powerful effects on the skin in this product certainly lives up to the hype! It has improved the texture and appearance of my skin, diminished my fine lines, and gave my skin a smoother and more even look. I recommend easing into usage and only use a pea size amount, otherwise it can be fairly drying. I’m staring my second tube!

I have sensitive/acne prone/ combination skin. Using this retinoid has been a work in progress. I’m currently on month 5 of using it and I’m only using it twice a week. I tried going with three times a week but my skin freaked out. So I’m slowly trying to work my way up. I purged like crazy on month 3. On month 4 my acne started to really clear up. Month 5 my scarring has improved tremendously and I have minimal acne breakouts. I do experience some dryness still so I also use hydrating skin care products (with an ultra hydrating face mask at night.) I started also using a benzoyl peroxide face wash (month 3) 2 x / week from another brand and it has also helped with clearing my acne. Will update in a couple of months!
