Late Antique Images of the Virgin Annunciate Spinning : Allotting the Scarlet and the Purple - image 1 of 1

About this item

The late antique iconography of the Virgin Annunciate spinning reflect an idealized Roman matron type that embodied a full range of powers and qualities, says Taylor, and this was the early concept of Mary God-bearer as a model for Christian women. Only under the growing influence of monastic asceticism and the codified rules established by the Church Councils of the fifth and sixth centuries was Mary's virtue narrowed to mere chastity and her power in the community transformed into an otherworldly holiness that was nearly impossible for real women to emulate. She analyzes the images in terms of roots and precedents, the maiden, the matron, the household, and memorial. Annotation ©2018 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
