Latin American Counter- Road Movie and Ambivalent Modernity (Hardcover) (Nadia Lie)
About this item
This book is the first monograph to offer a comprehensive and systematic overview of the way in which the Latin American road film genre reflects and mediates contemporary concerns in Latin American societies. Based on a body of 160 road films representing every country in Latin America, Nadia Lie’s study charts the variety of the road film through a concentrated focus on the genre’s relationship to modernity. Lie constructs this relationship in a new way: whereas the genre is normally presented as a critical meditation on modernity, Latin American road films show a more ambivalent attitude, highlighting both positive and negative sides of the phenomenon. This book proposes new concepts such as the idea of the “counter-road” film and uses important spatial concepts for the first time in road film scholarship.
