about this item

June 4, 1944, 6:30 pm, South of England. Liaison officers board twenty-two French vessels. Locked up with the commanders, they handed them a large sealed envelope. From the departure of the English, the "pachas" discover their mission in the operation "Neptune" (codename given to the landing of the Allied troops in Normandy). The crews are assembled. The men discover that they will be the first Frenchmen to contribute to the landing. Many of these sailors from France who will participate in the largest naval operation of all time, have joined de Gaulle in Great Britain. On the other hand, some, including their leader Admiral Jaujard, are more hesitant of the general. This book puts the men aboard these boats at the heart of the history. Among them, Querville with its submarine, Juno, who lands in Norway; a commando in charge of blowing up a heavy water plant; and Levasseur with the Aconit who sinks two U-Boats in twelve hours. The participation of French seafarers is rarely, if ever, mentioned when celebrating the anniversaries of the Normandy landing. This book helps to repair the injustice done to these men, their boats, and the Navy. Text in French.
