Q: I have heard that cast iron skillets can damage smooth top (glass) electric stoves. Is that correct?
submitted by hipjoint - 6 years ago
A:Â Totally fine on my glass cooktop, but it's extremely important that you don't move the cast iron (like shaking the pan during frying) back and forth or drag it across the cooktop. I *have* dropped a cast iron dutch oven onto the cooktop and it shattered mercilessly! Just be VERY careful each and EVERY time you use it on a glass cooktop.
submitted bySeattleite - 5 years ago
A:Â No this is not true. I only use cast iron skillets and my glass top stove has never been damaged by it. Just don't drop them on the stove because they are heavy! But anything heavy dropped on the glass might crack it. I LOVE my cast iron!
submitted byBarbaraSoFla - 6 years ago
A:Â Manufacturer of my glass top cooktop recommends against using cast iron. It easily scratches and can shatter it.
submitted byK - 1 year ago
A:Â Yes. Cast iron is not good for and can damage glass cook-tops.

Q: Does it come with a lid?
submitted by Amelie - 5 years ago
A:Â Mine did not come with a lid.
submitted bycmoran711 - 5 years ago
A:Â No, but you can buy it separately here on target's website.
submitted bySushant - 3 years ago
A:Â No, it does not. Still a nice skillet for the money.

Q: Does it come with the red silicone holder?
submitted by steph - 2 years ago
A:Â Yes, the one I got did. I ordered the Lodge 12" Cast Iron Skillet, and although it is shown in the picture, it is not mentioned in the description. I thought "why would they show a picture of it with the handle if it's not included?" I saw the answer from Lodge Manufacturing saying that it is not included, and was pleasantly surprised when mine came with the silicone handle.
submitted bySueT - 2 years ago
A:Â No, this is normally sold as a separate item.

Q: Some reviewers are saying that these pans from Target are inferior to the ones direct from the actual manufacturer. Specifically, that these are rough and not smooth like those from Lodge website. Is this true?
submitted by Senator Dickerson - 4 years ago
A:Â @Senator Dickerson - Great question! The products available from Target (both in store and online) are made the exact same way as those sold directly on the Lodge website. Lodge does not offer a different quality of cookware to Target. The roughness comes from the sand molding process used to cast the cookware. Because each mold is unique, the casting formed in it will be as well. Lodge works hard to keep the casting surfaces as consistent as possible, but there may be slight variations. Seasoning build helps to create a smooth surface as the cookware is used. Thanks, Lodge Customer Care

A:Â I purchased a 13(.25) pan at my local store and I did notice by the outer edge by the helper handle what looks to be some grind marks, probably caused when they are removing the excess material after casing.
Now I'm complaining, but I do wonder if there are pieces that Lodge makes that aren't totally perfect become seconds and sold at discounted prices.
I have many other Lodge pieces and have pretty much purchased then from discount/close out stores and have never had any problems with any of them.

Q: How deep is the skillet? Can I use it for deep frying?
submitted by matt - 6 years ago
A:Â No, I wouldn't use it for that purpose, it isn't very deep for actual "deep-frying". It's a skillet, so can be use for frying but not deep-frying.
submitted byfawnflowr - 6 years ago
A:Â It's only about 2 1/2 inches deep, so works for pan frying not deep frying.
submitted bySassy1 - 6 years ago
Q: Does a bonifyed chef like a preseasoned or regular cast iron pan?
submitted by Susanne - 6 years ago
A:Â All cast iron cookware (that isn't enameled) needs to be seasoned before using.
But whether it's preseasoned at the factory or home seasoned, it's still not totally seasoned. It takes years of use to get the smooth/slick coating on the bottom that is truly non stick.
That's why it you find a pan at a garage sale/flea market grab it.
submitted byScotty - 3 years ago
A:Â America's Test Kitchen recommends preseasoned so that is what I'm going with.

Q: how to wash cast iron pan
submitted by Chilampath15 - 3 months ago
A:Â Since the pan is new, I would wash it with hot water, clean it with a nylon bristle brush or non-scratch pad, rinse, hand-dry immediately, and rub the surface with cooking oil. Now the pan is ready to be used or stored. Since seasoning is an ongoing process, you will need to rub the cookware with cooking oil before and after each use to help build up additional seasoning layers.

Q: For this skillet (Lodge 12" Cast Iron Skillet), I am considering the Lodge 12" Glass Lid which has an upper limit of 400 degrees. Is there an option to exceed this limit? Metal lid perhaps?
submitted by Limited Kitchen Knowledge - 1 year ago
A:Â The Lodge 12" glass lid is oven safe up to 400 degrees. Lodge offers a Lodge Cast Iron Lid (L10IC3).
It’s a gift so can’t judge its performance etc. but it looks nice & I liked the silicon handle. I’d buy one for myself.

Terrific pan. Lodge quality is on a par with pans costing three times as much. However, mine arrived without the silicone handle cover. Had to order it diretly from Lodge.

I bought this a week ago and used it for the first time the other night. I roased veggies and when I took it out of the oven I noticed the handle was cracked. I'm so happy it didn't break in my hands. Horrible defect, I have never had a cast iron pan crack before.

I bought this to make filet mignon on Christmas Eve. Since it came pre seasoned I just used avocado oil and rubbed it all over the inside and outside with my hand. Let it sit for a few minutes then put it on my electric stovetop. I let it heat up for about 4 minutes. I added a generous amount of olive oil and began to sear 4 steaks. After searing I put them in the oven at 400 degrees for about 7 minutes. The steaks came out to absolute perfection. I removed grease with a napkin after cooking. I used morton kosher salt to remove grease. did not use soap or water. cleaned off the outside and it was good to go. Used it again a few days later and same routine. I plan to buy another one for baking. i think this will last a while as long as it is cleaned and prepped properly for every use.

Very nice cast iron skillet. Has a cover for the handle to manage heat of the skillet and it’s very well seasoned.
The cast iron pan I received did not have a silicone handle. I paid more for this pan because it came with the silicone handle. Will be returning.

I purchased this a year ago and have used it maybe 10 times total. I take complete care of it (I hand wash it, I use the proper spray to coat it, etc) but tonight while cooking green peppers in it, I heard a huge pop and saw that it had cracked??!? I have never heard of this happening to a cast iron skillet, they are supposed to last forever! What a piece of junk and a waste of money!!

This is the best skillet especially for the value. After looking at so many options, we landed on this for our first attempt at using a cast iron pan. It's great for a wide range of recipes and we season it each time so it seems to be holding up well.
