about this item

Designing a low-profile antenna brings with it a unique challenge—overcoming the inherent tendency for antenna performance to decrease as the height is decreased. Traditionally, this hurdle has been overcome using variations on common antenna elements, such as the loop, patch, spiral and helix. This book describes the next generation of low-profile antennas that use novel elements and take advantage of new concepts in antenna implementation, such as metamaterials. Metamaterials have become a topic of interest because they possess electromagnetic properties that are not found in naturally occurring materials. Metamaterials are realized artificially, typically by constructing lattices of simple elements. This unique property leads to antenna implementations that could otherwise not be realized, including a number of low-profile antenna implementations. The book covers recent progress in both natural and metamaterial antennas.
