About this item

The author examines the meaning-making practices of death rituals and situational beliefs in the Netherlands, focusing on the impact of the changing role of religion, the individualization of society, and the development of modern cremation on the structure and meaning of death ritual today and what situational beliefs emerge in the funerary and bereavement practices of survivors. She draws on interviews, participant observations, and a survey to consider the death rituals of recently bereaved Dutch people with a Roman Catholic or Protestant background or no religious affiliation, to understand ritual practice and ritual meaning and how they influence social, spatial, and temporal expressions and enactments of belief and vice versa, particularly afterlife beliefs and ongoing relationships between the living and the dead, by showing how situational beliefs of continued existence are present in practices, are ritualized, and become part of the prolonged process of death ritual. She explores the preparation and performance of the funeral ceremony, disposal practices (focusing on cremation), and the period of bereavement up to a year after the funeral, emphasizing the impact and meaning of secularization in the face of death.
