What happens when everything you know is ripped suddenly away? This is the fate that befalls Mary Jemison, a twelve-year-old frontier girl living in Pennsylvania in 1758. How does Mary find the will to carry on?
During the French and Indian War, Mary is captured by the French and Shawnee and led deep into the woods. After her family is killed, Mary is traded to the Seneca and adopted by two sisters. Mary becomes known as Dehgewanus and learns the language and the culture of the Seneca. She marries a Lenape warrior and eventually chooses to stay in her new way of life.
