Masculinity and Literary Studies : Intersections and New Directions (Hardcover)
about this item
This volume analyzes the intersections between masculinity and literary studies while exploring some of the latest developments and new directions resulting from such intersections. If much of the existing masculinity scholarship has traditionally been grounded in a specific discipline, this project shows the applicability of the latest interdisciplinary masculinity scholarship to the literary analysis, including contributions by renowned scholars from the fields of sociology, social work theory, psychology, ecology, and political science. Applying these interdisciplinary insights to the analysis of representations of masculinities in American literature, the book shows how not only is “the theory” of masculinity studies useful to the “practice” of literary criticism, but also how literary texts may themselves shed new light on some of the most pressing questions within current masculinity scholarship. Social and literary models of masculinity are shown to feed on each other, thus bridging the traditional gap between the Social Sciences and the Humanities in radically new and profound ways.
