Description

There are two things you need to know about OLD BAY Seasoning: 1. It 's great on seafood. 2. It 's great on everything else! OLD BAY 's unique blend of 18 herbs and spices was born along the Chesapeake Bay over 75 years ago. Today, it 's won over hearts (and mouths!) across the USA. Marylanders can 't imagine crab without it. They 're shaking and stirring it straight into low country boils down south, and all around the country, folks are getting creative, pairing OLD BAY with pizza, popcorn, donuts, veggies, burgers and fries to name a few.

Q: Is this old Bay in the original metal tin ? Thanks!

  • A: Old Bay Seasoning is currently packaged in a plastic can. We transitioned our Old Bay packaging from metal to plastic cans towards the end of 2017. ~ Erica

Great idea with the tape! I just put mine in a different container, Blackstone dredge. Don't forget a little rice. Old Bay, is really great on everything! Really great on shrimp! Potatoes, of all kinds. Popcorn! Thanks!

New Plastic Top Can

Clearly, the new plastic top can doesn't seem to be the best design but, I secured it with a small piece of masking tape, which actually took less time than crying about it on the blog. I buy it for the seasoning, not the container. A staple in my house.

We like this spice; however the plastic container large opening needs to be taped shut because ,once opened, does not close. Also, there is No Expiration Date on the bottom of the old or new plastic container. Am just guessing that the old one has been in my cupboard ~two years and needs to be replaced.

Im new to this spice. Recently read how frozen shrimp, without any defrosting, cook great under broiler in 5-7 minutes. Just need to first seperate shrimps frozen together by running water briefly until their apart. I tossed the frozen shirimp with this spice and worked perfectly. havent had any issue with the container others have complained of.

Bad plastic container, lids don't close

5 out of 5 stars
Old Bay Girl - 4 months ago

The plastic container lids are not able to snap shut once opened. I never open the non-sprinkle side and it came open on its own. Now it will NOT close, so when I shake the spice onto food, I have to keep my thumb on the other lid to prevent it from pouring out onto the food ! Not to mention, it won't close so anything can get into it including moisture. The product design team just doesn't need to be told, they need to fix it ASAP. How hard can it be to create a plastic snap closure that works? This isn't the first spice to go "plastic"! Besides that, yes Old Bay on everything from potatoes to fried chicken, potato chips, pasta, anything! I'm rating the spice as a 5, the plastic lid fiasco a 1.

Bad Plastic Container Design

Highly Disappointed - 5 months ago

Old Bay Classic has been my go to spice for many years. But the new plastic packaging is an epic fail. I never open the full top, only the sprinkle side. Nevertheless, while sprinkling Old Bay on 2 lbs. of ground turkey, the top fell open & dumped nearly a half a can of spice out all over the meal I was preparing. This was a costly mishap caused by the poor packaging. Please go back to the old design, which was very secure. This was my first plastic container, as I keep them stocked in the pantry. Now I have no tins left.

I have been enjoying Old Bay seasoning all of my life, even as a toddler. It still tastes great on just about anything you can imagine sprinkling it on. But the new plastic can is HORRIBLE! The lid will not stay closed and I have to use a strip of duct tape to keep it closed. That should never happen. Additionally, I dropped the plastic piece of junk from the spice cabinet accidentally and the corner of it cracked. This would not have happened with the metal can! Dented, but not busted. Also, plastic isn't environmentally friendly. I don't understand why companies try to "fix" what isn't broken.

Love Old Bay, hate the new plastic container

McCormick, what were you thinking? Plastic containers? I bought the 6 ounce 'can' and the lid won't seal correctly. It spills, too. I loathe your new plastic container. I was stationed with the US Army in Maryland-depending on when I alternately lived in Hagerstown, Aberdeen and Laurel. My favorite haunt for crabs was Bottom of the Bay in Laurel. That's where I learned to love Old Bay and cook fresh blue crab. I would buy several tins, back when it was in metal cans of Old Bay, because fans of the mix stationed elsewhere in the world would beg me to 'bring some Old Bay' when you get here'. But now I'm upset that you've changed the container to plastic. The world needs more Old Bay. The planet does NOT need yet another plastic container. They aren't recycleable, McCormick!! Come ON! Bring back the metal can!

Been a very long term user of Old Bay but bought new nonmetallic can. Top pops open if you squeeze it to get more out through holes. Wasted half a can on spillage. Avoid this new can but not this great flavoring!

Your plastic container is very subpar. The small openings for applying your product clogs up. In other words, it doesn't work.

Dumped all of container when trying to use the sprinkle side. Would not shut properly after opening. Had to throw out 2 lbs of crabmeat for crab cakes. It was my husband's birthday meal. Fix the container.

I had an empty metal container so the it away and bought a new can of my favorite seasoning. The new cap design is horrible. The top doesnt stay closed so you have to tape it shut. Please rethink your design so the lid stays shut.

Fabulous Old Bay

It's been five years since I made my lump meat crab cake recipe which uses Old Bay Seasoning. I made a special trip to the grocery store after I realized it would take too much time to make my own and probably not be as good (found this website when I was looking up ingredients). I bought the plastic container for the first time. I see all the negative comments on plastic, blah blah blah.... it seems to me the losers virtue signaling on how they're such good stewards of the environment who post over and over again to hurt a product/company lack insight. It's so easy to recycle plastic, how about you try that? It's a REUSABLE resource. Regarding the reviews stating there's too much plastic in the ocean.... why would your container end up there? That's probably where your fear mask is that you didn't recycle! While I liked the old tin, my experience with the plastic container is the lid snaps on EASILY; there's no risk to dumping the product out accidentally. A good company changes practices to help their help the bottom line while keeping their product high quality. BRAVO to McCormick for their long enduring fantastic irreplaceable Old Bay Seasoning which others can only try to reproduce. I don't care what you put it in.... metal, glass, plastic.... I will continue to buy it. Thanks McCormick!
