Q: Can this pump be used with Kiinde Direct Pump adapters instead of Medela bottles??

submitted by Rachel - 6 years ago
  • A: Yes it does work with the Kiinde system. The Standard Adapter is the one that I use w/the Medela pump to direct pump into the Kiinde pouches.

submitted byAnnoynmous - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Rachel! We currently do not test our brand with alternate brands. We do not know if they will work with Medela bottles.

Q: would this model be hands free user friendly?

submitted by jess - 6 years ago
  • A: I've used the Medela bustier, and its not my favorite. It has to be the perfect fit to make sure the breast cups (phalanges) have good contact with your breasts. There is a pretty awesome one with a velcro back made by another company.

    submitted byExclusive Pumper x 4 - 5 years ago
  • A: The Sonata will work with the Easy Expression Bustier to be hands free.

Q: Would this be compatible with either of the medela car adapters?

submitted by Kathy - 6 years ago
  • A: No, the Sonata pump can only be used with the power adapter or battery.

submitted byMedela Product Expert - 6 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: No, and I found out the hard way. I purchased a different adapter of the same voltage and tried using it. It didn't work. I ended up buying an adapter that converted my car outlet into a standard outlet so I could plug in the regular cord that came it with it.

    submitted byExclusive Pumper x 4 - 5 years ago

Q: Is this considered a closed system?

submitted by Remy - 6 years ago
  • A: The Sonata breast pump is designed with a milk barrier that is placed at the breast shield connector to keep milk from passing into the tubing. By market definition, Sonata is a closed system breast pump.

Q: what is the difference between this Medela model (Sonata Smart Hospital Performance Breast Pump) and the Medela Maxflow Double Breast Pump Model?

submitted by ssscampbell - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi ssscampbell--- Great question! The Sonata has some additional features. These include an illuminated touch screen display with a timer, two rhythm patterns to choose from, and the ability to connect to the Medela Family app to track pumping sessions. Please don't hesitate to chat with us on our website if you have any other questions. Have a great day!

Q: Do you need to buy the $50 warranty to work with Medela and get replacement parts/ trouble shooting, that kind of thing?

submitted by ashes91185 - 3 years ago
  • A: Hello ashes91185--- Thank you for your question. All Medela breast pumps and parts come with a manufactures warranty that starts from the date of purchase, so please make sure to keep your receipts. You do not need to buy the stores warranty for the manufacture warranty to be active. The store warranty will help you with returns through the store. -Your Medela Customer Solutions Team

Q: is this considered a hospital grade pump?

submitted by Shelby - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi Shelby--- No, it is not. The Sonata vacuum rhythm was inspired by our hospital-grade Symphony, so moms can experience consistent performance and comfort as they transition from hospital to home. However, the Sonata Breast Pump is a personal-use breast pump designed for a single user. Our Symphony breast pump is our hospital-grade breast pump, which is intended for multiple users. We hope that helps clarify! Please feel free to reach out to our team via live chat on our website if you have any further questions. - Your Medela Customer Solutions Team

Q: Can this be used with only on pump side? Or do you have to use both pumps?

submitted by Kproulx - 5 years ago
  • A: You can use it to single pump or to double pump. For single pumping, you'll want to remove the breast shield and connector from the side you won't be using. Then that tubing end can be inserted to the center dock on the tubing. Feel free to chat with our team if you have any questions. - Your Medela Customer Solutions Team

Q: What is the difference between the sonata and the pisa? Does the sonata have independent suction and speed control?

submitted by Pumpingstruggles - 5 years ago
  • A: The Sonata Smart Breast Pump includes an integrated rechargeable battery, it is more light-weight at 2.2 lbs, has two pumping rhythms to choose from, offers Hospital Performance, features Pump System Alerts, Bluetooth compatibility to connect to our MyMedela App, a lighted LED display, a pumping session timer, and is our quietest pump yet! The Sonata does not have separate suction and speed control, but it does have separate suction and rhythm control by offering two rhythms to choose from. Both breast pumps will feature our 2-Phase Technology (Stimulation & Let Down Phase), but the Sonata is the only one of the two with two pumping rhythms to choose from. We hope you find this information helpful! Our team may be able to better assist via chat or phone. Love/Hate Relationship

3 out of 5 stars
Voiced_Joy - 5 months ago
originally posted on medela.com
I have a love/hate relationship with this pump. I am an exclusive pumper due to my baby having tongue ties and not latching well to my elastic nipples. I pump 5 times a day for 30 to 60 minutes to produce enough milk. I have two sonatas- one for home and one for work. Both pumps are different year models which I bought second-hand because I couldn't afford them new. They both act the same way and have the same quirks so I know it's not a fluke when the pumps act up. First the good: -I am producing the most milk I ever have with rhythm #2 on this. I am making enough now to feed my baby. Even with renting a symphony, I was not able to do that. -There is no vibration on this pump, which I prefer and respond better to. -The suction is not painful. I have slightly elastic nipples and I can use a higher suction on this because of the rhythm. -The parts are easy to clean and last a long time. The bad: - The battery does not last long enough unless plugged in to go an entire day pumping. It barely lasts 15 off of the plug before I feel a difference in suction. - The pump sometimes randomly loses suction in the middle of a session even when plugged in- 15 to 20 minutes in. This happens more often if I try to enter the letdown/massage mode again to get a second or third letdown. To fix this have to turn off the pump and reset it by holding the power button. It doesn't always work the first time. This is time-wasting and annoying. My pump sessions are already long enough without having to troubleshoot. -The pump is not extremely portable- sure, it's better than dragging a symphony around or even a spectra, but the "handle" is slippery and I'm always worried about dropping it. - The pump is NOT as quiet as they claim it to be. I feel like three other pumps I've tried are quieter than the sonata, including the symphony. I've toyed with the idea of pumping in my cubicle instead of going to the lactation room, but the pump sound would definitely be disruptive to my neighbors. -The pump parts are heavy and require a SUPER supportive bra. I know the parts are part of what makes this whole thing work, but again it's annoying to have so much weight on the front. I use a heavy silicone flange which also adds to it. This makes it difficult to multi-task. Even changing my baby's diaper is quite the task when I'm worried that flanges might shift or fall out of my pumping bra. -Parts are expensive and not compatible with any other pump parts (thankfully you can use silicone flanges)- yes they do seem to last longer than parts on other pumps, but they still need to be replaced often enough that it's a nuisance- especially if you are exclusively pumping and want multiple sets to cut down on washing. Overall- I will use the sonata because it is more effective than any other pump I've tried, but I would like a pump that has more reliable suction, better battery life, and is more portable.

Hi Voiced_Joy--- We appreciate your honest feedback and apologize for any issues you may have encountered. Please be aware that we follow FDA guidelines that state only hospital-grade pumps, such as the Symphony and Lactina, can be used by more than one person. Because of this, we can't advise use with a secondhand personal use pump. Please don't hesitate to contact us at 800-435-8316 with any questions or concerns. We'd be happy to help!

I bought this pump for my Jan 2020 baby! It assisted me with pumping over 10,000 oz! Majority of which I was able to donate to other mama's in need. I just bought my replacement parts and plan on using those for my new Jan 2023 baby due next week! I will always recommend this pump to everyone I talk to!

Bad Battery life and suction!

I bought this through insurance and paid the extra money to get it because I was told it was the best one. It was fine the first month then started having slow suction where I needed to crank the level pretty high for it to feel like it was working. The battery life doesn’t last long and when it gets down to half way and less seems like it doesn’t work as much as it should still.

Love/hate relationship

I really do want to love this pump in its entirety, but it keeps failing. I purchased it last year, after I had to return the hospital issued symphony, and the power butting just broke off one night. Medela did replace it, and that pump just died last night. It doesn’t charge or power on at all anymore. I purchased the freestyle flex when my first sonata broke, and it just doesn’t pump as well as this one. When it is working, I pump almost as much as when I had the symphony. Altogether I have spent over $700 in pumps in a year, and I am starting to think I should have just bought the symphony.

I bought this pump in 2019 with my first born. Used it while he was in the NICU then after we brought him home. It is amazing and so close to the hospital grade pumps. I’m excited to get replacement tubing for it and use for my second babe due at the end of the year! The app is super easy to use and links right to your pump.

Strong pump, parts fragile

This is my third baby and first time using this model. The pump itself is great and very strong, however the parts are very fragile. A connector cap broke and now I have to manually hold it on my pump. I looked for a replacement and even called customer service, but they only sell the full set (and I just need one connector cap). Reading other reviews, this seems to be a common problem.

I bought this for my LO before I delivered. I delivered in November 2021. I upgraded through my insurance and paid some out of pocket for this pump because I wanted a hospital grade pump. With my last pregnancy I wasn't able to breastfeed for long because of my supply so I wanted to be prepared this time. I am currently exclusively pumping and this pump does great with my supply. The pump is easy to use with and without the app. The parts are easy to assemble and clean. I don't have any complaints about the pump at all.

Worked for first few weeks, now it's touch and go

2 out of 5 stars
allison05 - 1 year ago
originally posted on medela.com
I did so much research before buying this pump and I was happy with it for about the first 3 weeks or so. I've been exclusively pumping for 8 weeks now, pumping 7-9 times per day. Around 3 weeks in, it started occasionally hitting me with a random double-strength suction pump once every few sessions, which was annoying and painful but not a deal-breaker. That has been getting more frequent since then, and sometimes it skips a beat. But now for the last week or so, it has trouble starting up - it will tell me there's a leak in the tubing for a mystery amount of time after I press play (5 seconds - 1+ minutes) before suddenly hitting me with suction. There's no leak. I've replaced the tubing and everything is assembled tightly together. It just adds a layer of stress and anxiety to an already uncomfortable task. I'm worried that it will just stop working completely and then what am I going to do? I was going to buy a different Medela pump but it looks like all the parts and gear I already have only work with this particular model so it seems like a safer bet would be to just start over and buy a different brand of pump. Another SUPER annoying thing is that the kit doesn't come with any bottle nipples. Why would they do that? They don't even mention that you need to buy your own nipples separately for the bottles that are included with the kit. I had this breast pump kit all ready to go when I got home from the hospital and then realized I can't even feed my baby. So frustrating. Nipples for the included bottles should obviously also be included in this kit.

I want to love this pump - but I don't

2 out of 5 stars
Tiffany S. - 2 years ago
originally posted on medela.com
I've been using the Sonata for over 3 months now and is the only pump I've ever used. I trusted the Medela name and had high expectations for this pump. Medela was the only brand covered by my insurance and is carried by my hospital. I read the reviews and decided on the Sonata for its expression modes, Bluetooth features, and quiet motor. The expression modes are good, I don't have anything to compare them to but I can say it is relatively comfortable. I do not have a preference between the two rhythms. I appreciate that you can cut the sound off and it saves my settings from previous use. You have to allow plenty of room at the tube connection to the pump to prevent kinking, which is also a challenge if you're having to travel with it and packing it up. I have been thoroughly disappointed with the app and Bluetooth connection. The app frequently glitches, does not store my milk properly and will lose connection to the pump. I quit using that feature altogether because it was so unreliable. It has lost all of my milk stored in the app and I've had to start over with another platform. I do like that the app offers quick access guides to support or answer your questions. I think the app has some great features but ultimately falls short in its ability to function properly. I had to order flanges from another company because the flanges included were too large. I absolutely hate these connectors! For one they stick out almost 5 inches from my breast when you allow room for the tubing to not be kinked. This may not seem like much of a big deal but it means you can't sit at a table/desk without having to sit far back or maneuver carefully. Carefully is the next major issue! With the slightest tip, just a 15% angle, will cause these connectors to leak. You'll end up with a lovely milk stain all over your shirt or pants. I now pump with a towel underneath it because it happens so frequently. The other issue I have with these connectors is their height. from the top of the connector to the bottom of the bottle is over 7 inches. When I sit down, they are right on my legs and create an uncomfortable fit OR it causes it to tip just enough to leak. Additionally, milk stays stored in the tunnel, and is difficult to get all of it. Don't worry though, in disassembly the milk will spill out everywhere. Not to mention all the parts that have to be cleaned with minimal replacement options. I really do want to love this pump. Unfortunately, it seems that some of these items could be such simple fixes and seem out of touch with what pumping looks like in reality. With the name Medela, I had higher expectations. Keep in mind, you'll be dealing with these issues while also caring for your little one when every drop of milk is precious. For a company devoted to family's and breastfeeding, I think you can do better.

I’ve had my pump for seven months and use it one to two times a day. At first it was just the battery that stop working and only allowed me to use it when plugged into the wall. Not great but I thought oh well… two months later and the dang thing stopped working all together. Plugged in or not, I cannot get it to power on. The battery shows it’s full (as usual) and the charge icon will change based on if it’s turned in or not, but it will not power on. I’m extremely disappointed in this expensive pump. I don’t recommend this pump at all.

Waste of money! I'm so disappointed because I paid so much for this pump and it doesn't even work. Save your money and buy a different one. The suction isn't great what so ever, I usually pump 5/8 sometimes 9 oz and with this pump I was lucky to even get 1! I can't even return it or exchange it because its a breast pump. I love that it came with extra bottles and a little bag for storage. I work so I pump on my breaks and had a hard time with it connecting to my phone. it only kept track of 3 of my pump sessions. I used it 6 times. I was so excited, literally couldn't stop talking about it while it was charging and now I'm just so disappointed. Please save your money and purchase something else

I absolutely love this pump! With my first child I was gifted this pump from a friend who used it with her 2 children as an exclusive pumper. I used it as if I was an exclusive pumper while actually fully nursing my daughter. I had a massive oversupply and it was amazing. I never once had any issues with clogged ducks, nipple pain, etc. I will say that I did have several issues with the pump itself with needed new tubes and batteries. Every time I contacted the company though, they sent replacement parts right out with no extra cost to me. With baby number two due any day now, I just purchased a new one since the last one had been used with three babies each pumping for over a year and can't wait to use it again!

Please keep in mind that all of our personal use breast pumps like the Sonata are single user items. They are regulated by the FDA this way and should not be shared even if you purchase your own pumping parts. I bought this pump mainly because of the rechargeable battery function since I don’t always have access to power outlet at work. Medela was kind enough to send me 4 replacement pumps (at different times and I returned the old pumps) because every single pumps that I got went defected after several months of use. The first one the display wasn’t working. the second one didn’t hold the charge and wouldn’t charge fully. The third one made squeaky sound. Now with the 4th one, when use on battery it keeps shutting off after 10-15’ of pumping even though there’s still battery. I called customer service and they refused to send me anymore replacement. If you’re gonna pump for only 2-3 months, yes it is a good pump. The pump doesn’t last at all. It’s a waste of money in my opinion given how expensive it is. Now I have to plane plugged in a wall in order to pump. Totally defeat the purpose of getting this pump.

Hi, I just had this pump replaced for charging issues at the end of August. My warranty expired in August since I purchased the pump a few months before I had my son. Of course I am on vacation and need to pump when this pump will not turn on or hold a charge. The pump was manufactured July 2019 and is already having issues broken 4 months later with only less than 2 months of use. I am very disappointed in this product and it makes me sad that the broken Medela Sonata is the reason my pumping breast feeding journey has to come to an end!

I bought the Medela Sonata Breast Pump for my first baby on 2017, now on 2019 I am using it again but what a surprise when I noticed that with every use, the battery last for less till now that I just can use it plugged. I bought the Sonata wich is the most expensive reference because of the possibility to use it wireless, but now I can’t do it, it is too much money for a product that doesn’t work as well as I expected and finally works plug like other references that work the same for less money.

OMG! This is so worth the investment. I bought my 2016 model in February 2017 and had my DS in August 2017. I now have since given birth to my DD in March 2019. This pump is still going strong. No suction problems. No errors up until today. My pump now will not hold a charge past 1 pump session during an 8 hour shift at work. 1st time I've ever experienced a problem. I've read all the other reviews and I disagree with anything less than 5 stars. This pump is amazing. I love it. I got every penny spent if this is its last leg. Mothers, it's worth the buy. Just make sure your using it correctly. I have exclusively pumped my DS and now my DD and my pump is 3 years old. It's quiet like the symphony. I use it with my mobile app as well. Love the preset programming on this one. The only come is not every bottle fits with it. But bbn otherwise, easy to use and pump.

Great pump but some annoying features

Pump works great if it’s charged. Biggest frustration is the display. It’s hard to tell what percentage the battery is at when you have the pump turned on. So it’s extremely frustrating when you are in the middle of a pumping session and the pump dies. Then you have no clue how long you have been pumping for because it starts over.....

Hello Teesa--- We're sorry to hear that you are having a hard time seeing the battery indicator on your pump screen. Sonata’s display is best visible within indoor home or work environments. Pumping in direct sunlight or extreme low light may impact the display brightness and legibility. If you are pumping in either of these environments we recommended you use the Pumping Screen, on the MyMedela® app, to assist in reading your current breast pump session settings, battery and time. If you need help with anything please chat with us and provide reference number 262970. Have a good day!
