about this item

Mehlman and Limmer explore what they have learned and what remains mysterious about the genre of Jewish writing call the Minor Midrash. They evaluate the question of the canon of the genre, examine the historical milieu in which the texts were created, discuss how that canon was formed through the far-flung scholarly endeavors of the Wissenschaft des Judentums period, and arrive at Medieval Midrash as a more precise name for the genre. They conclude that the texts were written in the days following the close of the rabbinic period and before the dawn of the Enlightenment, drawing on Jewish life astride the great medieval empires of Byzantium, Roman Catholic Christianity, and Islam.
