I usually wear a size extra large, and these Goodfellow and Co. shorts were a size extra large, and they were too big for me. It does have a drawstring waist but even with that there was probably 2.5 or 3 inches of a gap so I would recommend shoe size down but they are really soft inside. My 13 year old is 5', 6" tall and is average weight. He is wearing an adult small, his usual size. These fit perfectly. The waist was slightly big but had a string, so that was good. The length was right below the knee, which is perfect. The material is slightly thick, good for fall and spring. The price is steep though. I received an incentive to write this review. These knit shorts by Goodfellow & Co. are good and comfortable. My son is wearing a size small. He is about 5' tall and weighs about 100 pounds. These are a nice quality and well made. The material is soft. The waistband is elastic and has a drawstring as well. The dark gray color is nice for matching all t-shirts. I received an incentive to write this review. I am 5-7 and wear L. Great shorts although could be a tad longer. Very soft and stretchy. Material is thick but not heavy. Draw string is of good quality and they just really look good. Side prockets are great, good size large enough to carry basic things but not too big to look odd.
