about this item

Adapted from the World Health Organization's evidence-based mhGAP Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) for Mental, Neurological and Substance Use Disorders in Non-Specialized Health Settings from 2010, this mhGAP (mental health Global Action Programme) guide serves as a tool to support areas affected by humanitarian emergencies in assessing mental, neurological, and substance use conditions in non-specialized health settings where access to specialists and treatment options is limited, especially in low and middle-income countries. It explains advice for clinic managers and the general principles of care for people with these conditions, focusing on communication, assessment, management, reducing stress and strengthening social support, protecting human rights, and attention to overall well-being, followed by modules on the assessment and management of acute stress, grief, moderate-severe depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, epilepsy/seizures, intellectual disability, the harmful use of alcohol and drugs and life-threatening alcohol withdrawal, suicide, and other significant mental health complaints. Changes from the main guide include rewritten guidance on conduct disorder to provide advice on behavioral problems in adolescents; separation of the module on stress, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder into three modules; and an added glossary. The guide excludes alcohol and drug intoxication and dependence, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, dementia, non-imminent risk of self-harm, and second-line treatments.
