About this item
Scholars of English literature contest the stability of the dividing line between the avant-garde, or the highbrow, and the middlebrow, bringing to the fore the sociocultural, gendered factors that impact the construction of both. In so doing, they explore the emergence of modernism outside elitist territories and examine middlebrow literature in its relation to sociocultural developments in the marketplace. The period they considers, 1890-1945, witnessed the burgeoning of modernism and its rise to prominence. Their overall themes are contact zones; heroics of the everyday; and gender, sexuality, and the management of anxiety. Annotation ©2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
