About this item

Monroe presents the Arabic texts of Ibn Quzmann's poetry in a Romanized transliteration rather than in the original Arabic script, because the prosodic form of his zajal poetry in Romance in origin, whereas its poetic content derives from the Arabic literary tradition. The poetry, therefore, could interest both Romanists and Arabists, and he thought that Arabists would more likely able to read the Roman script than Romanist would be the Arabic. In the first part, he presents the transliteration accompanied by an English prose translation of all the known, surviving strophic poems, be they in complete or fragmentary form, from the manuscript of his Diwan or from other sources. In the second part, he presents literary studies of several representative examples of the strophic poems. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
