About this item

This volume details a theory of how students in elementary and secondary schools can be taught and translates it into practice through innovative teaching practices. It is based on a teacher education project in Israel, in which graduate students designed and taught units of study based on the Multidimensional Curriculum Model, a framework for conceptualizing learning and designing curricula that incorporates big multi/transdisciplinary issues from personal, global, and time perspectives in blended learning environments that integrate technology. They also researched its contribution to the development of higher order thinking skills, knowledge, motivation, and learning strategies, as well as students’ perceptions of its contribution to their learning. The book presents the concept of future thinking literacy, which combines the components of the model and illustrates how they lead to the enhancement of future thinking and develop future thinking literacy. The first section introduces future thinking literacy and the model, then subsequent sections address different aspects of the curriculum through specific units: science and technology (genetics), math (consumerism), language arts (English as a foreign language), and social studies (community settlements); the Bible (leadership), music (the Beatles), and life skills (the self); interdisciplinary units on energy, Jerusalem, human rights, language arts and sciences (cell phones), and women’s status and rights from the perspective of the Bible and social studies; and gifted learners (developing leadership and global citizenship) and learners at risk (economics and globalization). Chapters include example units with lesson plans illustrating the application of personal, global, and time perspectives, teaching strategies, thinking processes, and products, as well as future scenarios written by students projecting themselves into the future and imagining life in terms of the topic.
