about this item

Hoffmann presents this architectural assessment of the recent European boom in museum building. An initial essay draws out the history of museum building and its civic meaning, as potentially elaborate and palacial buildings meant not for rulers but for public enjoyment and edification, with the tension between older museums and new modern aesthetics commented upon. The next chapters discuss design parameters including delivery access, walking routes through the exhibits, spatial hierarchy of exhibition points, lighting and climate, disability accessibility, and security features. The largest section of the book features fifty-three museum buildings with commentary regarding their architectural planning. Within the exposition of building photographs is embedded an interview with Uwe R. Brückner, commenting on scenography in museum design and artistic process of several recent projects. The spine includes a bookmark ribbon. Annotation ©2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
