Q: Will the crystals grow in a cool environment? I have them on our porch, about 50-60 degrees F. We started it yesterday and I hate to move it since that would disturb the jar. Already seeing crystals

submitted by A Witt - 6 months ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. We have found that crystals grow more consistently in warmer environments. Our instructions recommend at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit. If your crystals are already growing, this is a great sign and we agree it would be best at this point not to move the jar as any new crystals may fall off. If porch temperatures are consistent you should see crystals continue to grow over time.

Q: what green is the green crystal that is included in the box? Also is it real?

submitted by JTS - 3 years ago
  • A: The green crystal included in this box is a genuine fluorite specimen. It is included in order to show the difference between what nature makes and what they are making! I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Kind regards, Megan Customer Support

Q: What happens if the crystals are disturbed from the rock but still in the jar. Will they continue to grow or stop growing? Should I leave it alone or try to move the crystals back on the rock?

submitted by MM Mom - 4 years ago
  • A: Hello If the crystal has been disturbed and is no longer attached to the seed rock, it should still continue to grow. We do not recommend attempting to reattach it as that could stress the crystal out. If it was a great disturbance that caused the crystal to separate, it will most likely not have further growth. If you have any further questions please feel free to reach out to us at help@natgeotoys.com

Q: Does these make REAL crystals or ate they like a plastic/glass type

submitted by SKY ROBLOX - 4 years ago
  • A: Hello. Our crystals are a chemical reaction that creates real tetragonal crystals. These are neither glass nor plastic they are formed with Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP), commonly called monoammonium phosphate.

Q: What age(s) is this recommended for?

submitted by Lindsay E - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi Lindsay. The suggest age is 8 years and older

Q: sat for 2 weeks and nothing has changed, still just looks like half round piece with little residue at top of glass. followed the directions, but doesn't seem to be growing. We also used about 3/4 of the powder.

submitted by lisa - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi Lisa, Stability is key so you will want to place your crystals somewhere with as little movement or temperature variation as possible, as they do stress easily. The crystals do not need light to grow so you could place them inside a cabinet if that is easier. If you choose this method, you may want to leave them an extra couple days. (we leave ours for 30 days resulting in 1 1/2"-2" points) You can always reach out to us, using the phone number on the package, for a replacement, to try the experiment again.

Q: Why shouldn't you grow these in a bedroom? What is the specific risk of touching or eating chemicals?

submitted by kat - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Kat We do not recommend a bedroom as crystals like a quiet growing environment, as they are easily stressed. Plus many children play in bedrooms and keeping them in a bedroom, runs the risk of bumping the growing location and spilling the solution. Stability is key so place your crystals somewhere with as little movement or temperature variation as possible. Our crystals are safe to handle, but keep in mind they are a chemical and people often touch their face without even realizing it. Always wash hands thoroughly after handling our crystals. If you have any more questions and/or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at help@natgeotoys.com

Q: How long to grow the crystals

submitted by Pizzaman1 - 5 years ago
  • A: Depending on the temperature and altitude it should take any where between a few days to a month for your crystal to grow nice points.

We have used a few of these kits, and my kids love them. We regularly give these as birthday gifts for my kids' friends, too, and everyone seems to enjoy them. (I only wish the crystals grew bigger.)

This Was A Great Activity For Us To Conplete With Our Seven Year Old. We Had Such A Fun Time Making It Together And Learning About The Flourite Sample That It Wouldn't Have Mattered If The Crystals Grew Or Not. Thankfully We Saw Growth Within The First Day Our Child Really Loved This!

Crystals look very little like the box. Crystals are very small and slender, measuring no longer than 3cm. And they don’t actually glow in the dark - the base does. Project is fun, but involves boiling water, so adult does a lot of it.

Nice looking crystals

5 out of 5 stars
Michelle - 3 years ago
This kit grows clear crystals that glow in the dark, as stated on the package. You also receive a greenish rock, called fluorite (shown on the right in my first picture). The crystals you grow are not supposed to be green in daylight, but do glow green in the dark after shining a light on them for a while. We made some nice sized crystals by making sure it grew in a place that wasn’t used very often (a closet). Teaches kids to be careful, patience, and that science takes time.

We did follow instructions. It never turned green. It didn't grow much. Only very little. It only spread wider flat not up. It wasn't pretty. Made lot mess, hard to clean. Had to throw away stuff it grew on.

This totally did not work for us. It does warn that there are many factors that may cause it to not work. The project definitely is for a higher age group because my younger child needed a lot of help with this and yet, it still didn't work.
