about this item

This is a book that studies how journalism as work is affected by changes in journalism as an institution using a comparative perspective, and analyzing six countries--Britain, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden--regarding contemporary newswork. Citing that what is true about journalism as work and institution in one country may not pertain in another, Örnebring notes that it is only to be expected considering that the “institutional base” of journalism has been historically constituted in quite different ways across the world. Whereas previously journalistic work was done within centralized organizations which provided stable, long-term employment, today atypical, short-term and casual labor is now widespread in journalism without any expectation or hope of remuneration. The book discusses the meaning of professionalism in the context of labor market deregulation, rise in short-term contracts and project-based work, and describes two competing forms of professionalism in journalism and other occupations--organizational professionalism and occupational professionalism. He aims to analyze the ways in which journalism-as-institution explains journalism-as-work in a comparative context, using the conceptual pairing of organizational/occupational professionalism as the main analytical lens.
