This is a pretty solid pomade for the price. Though named "Finishing Pomade", it's more akin to a matte paste or a matte wax.
Out of the jar, it feels like a sticky putty that breaks down creamy in your hands, and application into dry hair has some tug, but it's not too bad. After applying, you'll notice a waxy shine that dies down quickly into a more natural matte finish that isn't too dry. Hold is accurately stated to be a medium. It seems to come out all the way (or at least mostly) with just water, but with how waxy it feels, you might need a bit of shampoo. Speaking of wax, if you touch your hair throughout the day, you will feel some wax on your hands, so that's a bit of a con. And the scent is very nice in the jar, but fades pretty much completely shortly after applying.
I really like the scent of this item but unfortunately it is very hard to work with. It is very thick (gritty) and you really have to work to get it to disappear in the hair. Many times I ended up rewashing my son's hair or we ended up with a style we weren't going for because it was more important for him to not walk around with clumps of pomade in his hair, than it was to have a cool style. Would not buy again, sad I wasted money on it this time.
My first attempt at using the Goodfellow & Co hair products was the Polishing Cream. I found that to be extremely gritty and hard to work into the hair. Final hold on that one was more of a firm with a bit of shine to it.
By contrast this Finishing Pomade (probably more like a matte pomade or matte paste), is actually really nice to work with. There is still some grit and you have to put in some effort to break it down fully, but much better than the Polishing Cream. The hold is much closer to what I'd expect out of a medium hold product, but I agree with the other reviewer that the finish is definitely not matte. More like a natural finish, definitely more matte than the Polishing Cream, though.
Except for the tough, gritty breakdown, I actually really like most of the other aspects of this pomade. Helps keep the flyaways down, provides a softer hold, and the scent is great (like with all of their hair products). Can't go wrong with this for the price.
I give it two stars because the scent is very nice and light. Also the ingredients are great! I tried the polishing cream but had to return it because it was so gritty. The same problem with this product. It must be wax or something. I applied this pomade and had to rewash my hair because the grit was so bad it looked like I had dandruff. It probably wouldn't be a problem on light hair.
Just bought some last night in store to try out since I was looking for another matte pomade to try. First time I had seen this product. Pretty nice, a bit gritty which isn't a bad thing. Great scent, pretty subtle. The ingredients are pretty amazing for the price. I tried it on dry hair this morning and I wouldn't say its a matte pomade, more like a semi-matte or natural shine. Will likely keep using this into the future. Definitely way better than the Old Spice Matte Pomade I had been using.
