About this item

Guaisu offers this accessible book on the concept of native species and the discourse around non-native, introduced or "invasive" species. He introduces the book with his purpose of explaining some of his own opinions as a research biologist on the new field of invasion biology. He begins by pointing out the subjectivity of labels, given the basic uncertainty in determining a species' "native" range, the fact that humans have likely been moving species around the world for longer than recorded history, and a lack of clear distinction between the various terms "non-native,""alien", "exotic", "introduced", and of course "invasive." He critiques the static concept of a native range in light of evidence that ranges change naturally according to climate and habitat changes, population expansion, or nonhuman animals incidentally transporting smaller organisms. He discusses biodiversity and contrasts a species conservationism approach with the speciation and hybridization that can be pressured by introduced species. He covers several case studies of introduced species regarded as harmful and invasive, but ultimately finds that in many cases the evidence for negative impact was weak, and points out positive contributions often made, as well as the fact that in the long term even species with an "invasive" population boom often experience a subsequent collapse. He describes the consequences he's seen from control/eradication efforts against invasive species, and finally concludes with questions about what the true goals of invasion biology are and whether they are actually served by species nativism as currently expressed.
