A Fantastic JRPG Experience

Octopath Traveler is a wonderful JRPG that just sucks you in from the moment you start. You can choose which character you start with out of 8 available, and you can choose to recruit the others later on, or not, depending on what kind of experience you want to have. While some have issue with the level grinding, I've found it to be really fun, and not a chore at all. There are recommended levels for each part of the story, and I only found myself doing a bit of grinding before facing a boss (maybe 30 minutes to an hour at most) Plus, JRPGs usually involve a bit of grinding, and I find it fun to battle with different characters and setups. I could see the level grind being a problem if you either don't want to play as many characters (leaving less travel and opportunities to level everyone up) or if you want to go from chapter to chapter with little to no exploration. Presentation wise, the voice acting is wonderful, and although not all lines are completely voiced, it's still a treat to hear the characters in battle. The graphics are intriguing to say the least, as they use a graphical style reminiscent of past JRPG games (like the character sprites), but also use elements like brilliant shading, light effects, and playing with depth perception. It's a wonderful treat for the eyes, as well as the ears, as this game also features a lovely soundtrack. Everything from town themes, to character themes, to boss battles, to exploring dungeons is made even better with fitting music. If you're a fan of JRPGs and you're on the fence about this game, grab it, you won't regret it. I've sunk a lot of hours in to this game already, and I can't wait to experience more.

My husband has been wanting this game for a while; I finally gave in and got it for him. He's only had it less than a week, but has been playing it every day since.

Great Old With The New

Octopath is such a fun, old school based game. Basically it reminds me of the older rpg games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. You control 8 different travelers which almost completely different backgrounds and go adventuring into the world. There are some beautiful 3D backdrops with intense and careful voice acting. Pretty much a blend of the old with the new. It has an unique blend of playing with different characters with branching story-lines. I think this is great so you don't end up with a very linear tale(which many people often complain about with rpg/adventure games). The music is beautiful and the cut scenes are well thought out. As with rpgs, you ARE going to spend some time leveling up so that's to be warned for anyone thinking this is some quick 20 hour game. It's over 40 hours on average with minimal completion. I really enjoyed it being on the Switch as sometimes there was so much to do that you would come back to it later sometimes in a traveling situation. A great bang for the buck.

After 10 hours it hits you that the gameplay is really shallow and a chore to grind through. More grind than a Korean MMO and that's because the battles are sooooo slow. Not a well paced game either, you really need to grind hours of time to get to the next part of the story because the story content is always in a zone much higher than you currently are. Read the threads on Reddit and you'll see.

Octopath Traveler is so reminiscent of Final Fantasy III/VI, which is one of my favorite games on the SNES. Lots of playable characters, deep engaging storylines, a nostalgia-invoking graphics style, and satisfyingly simple yet deep battle mechanics will keep you enthralled for countless hours. Playing in handheld mode doesn’t take anything away from this game at all, and in fact, is almost preferable sometimes. The voice acting is great, though only some lines are voiced, and the music and sound effects are spot-on. I can’t praise Octopath Traveler enough.

If you enjoy traditional turn based JRPG and don't mind 16-bit sprite design, get this game. You won't be disappointed!
