About this item

Professor Emeritus Mallory looks for the definition of Irish by investigating Ireland’s history. In this richly illustrated and accessible book he focuses on the usual criteria for researching any human group--genes, physical composition, culture, and language. One theory asserts that the ancestor of what would eventually emerge as the Irish spread during the Neolithic from Turkey, across the Balkans and Central Europe and south along the Mediterranean, and thence, the Atlantic, arriving in Ireland circa 4000 BC. An alternate theory associates the Indo-European languages with the movement of peoples from the European steppe westwards into Europe, arriving in Ireland sometime after 2500 BC. He finds that the most probable period of the introduction of Irish lies between circa 1000 BC and the first century BC. Also, the rise of Iron Age ritual centers in the first centuries BC may also have been a vehicle for language shift and stimulated the consolidation of the Goidelic language.
