About this item

Petrie notes that perceptions and representations may live longer in the mind than lived experiences and that misapprehension may, in part, be due to omission: e.g., the majority of paintings/drawings from early European-Maori contact rarely depict lower-class Maoris who were sans clothing, tattoos, and adornments. Citing discrepancies in the treatment of slaves and prisoners of war that show up in recorded history since early millennia BC, she notes the same exists within Maori society. She intends to explain these discrepancies and at the same time illuminate dark corners of New Zealand history. Noting that not all Maori war captives were treated like slaves and not all slaves were captives, she applies a thematic rather than strictly chronological approach in order to suggest how, why, and when changes to their positions and circumstances occurred.
