This is a really cool and fun way to introduce kids to the coding world. Augie pairs with any type of tablet and my kids had fun with it. My 12 year old could obviously do all the cool stuff with it, the coding and programming it to do things, but I loved that my 3 year old could also enjoy it by using the "Free Play" mode. He really had fun with that. There are several different modes to play in to give it some variety. I gave this 4 stars just because it can be a bit difficult at first to figure out how to get it connected. After I finally got the hang of it and realized what I was doing wrong, I was able to connect with no problem. I love seeing all the cool new STEM toys available for kids, they are great way to get kids interested. I definitely recommend Augie for all kids.
This review took a little longer to write because I wanted to make sure we were able to set it up and really test it out before writing a review. Overall, this is a great, educational toy for an older child, around early elementary school. It was fairly easy to set-up with our iPad as the directions were very clear. And I will say it’s a nice way that we can engage with our daughter to use our iPad vs. other educational “game” apps that are out there which I don’t think add much value and only increase screen time. She really enjoyed the tech aspect of connecting the robot to the iPad! The app is pretty easy to navigate as well – I was worried it was going to take us (my husband and I) hours to figure out how to use this! So there are a lot of cool things you can do with Augie – there are coding classrooms in the app to learn how to drag and drop commands for Augie to follow, you can learn to write simple scripts and sequences, there is a game component, and ability for free play where you can control Augie freely and also make it make sounds. As we are not coders of any sort, we really enjoyed going through the coding classrooms with our daughter. It’s always nice when a child’s toy is not annoying or boring for the adult! This has been our go to activity for the past few weekends – setting up an “obstacle course” for Augie to get through. As a parent, I do think this is little pricey, but you are def getting a "toy" that is not like any other toy. I think this would be really great gift for any child that shows interest in learning about how things work.
My 10 yr old son always wanted to be in robotics at school and this robot just gave him a head start. He absolutely loves working with computers and learning codes. With this robot he gets to do all that and more. He is able to give his robot a personality and learn different types of coding plus play different kinds of games with it. Him and his friends play and have little coding challenges with it. We just can't get over all the awesome things this robot actually does.
This is a pretty cool product. However, there were a lot of layers to the set up in downloadingthe app and connecting it to the robot. At one point, we messed up in the set up and it was confusing to figure out how to go back and fix it. That said, once set up it a super cool, very hands on way for our son (and us) to learn more about coding. It has to be used on very flat surfaces; it struggled a bit on our tiled floors with grooves.
It feels like there is so much pressure as a parent to raise a genius kid- which is basically impossible. However, this incredible toy is helping my daughter learn programming basics, asbstract thought processes, robotics, and a wide range of other technological skills via play. We love the AR integration of the drag and drop programming that my daughter is actually learning in school. The set up is extremely easy with wonderful directions. I had the robot up and running within five minutes. The ability to differentiate the level of user is amazing and makes this a great a product. The mechanics of the robot are also well made and it seems sturdy enough to take a few accidental kicks and drops. I like that my kid is able to use her iPad for something other than just passively watching Netflix as well. It is so great that she is growing up in a time where she has access to such fun and exciting tech toys that are targeted to a much wider audience than they once were! I highly recommend this cool toy!! It would be great for classroom use too!
This is our first time using a STEM toy with our 5 year-old but we had a ton of fun! Once my son got the hang of the app (with help from his dad) he really enjoyed it but he did need some assistance using it. My son enjoyed the free play mode the best, but I think as he gets older he'll like the coding aspect as well. You do need a lot of space for Augie to move around--we had to move some furniture and rugs so it could have more mobility. Setup wasn't too complicated and the app was fairly intuitive. Before giving this as a gift make sure the family has a compatible device--you can't do anything with the robot unless you have a tablet to run the application on. We tried it on my iPhone 7 Plus just to see if it would work and it was fine. Overall this is a really fun into to coding for elementary school age children.
Augie is very cool, and with a few tweaks could be awesome. First, the info on the box mentions a camera adapter and arm adapter, both of which I couldn’t find any additional information on, not even on the manufacturer’s website. I understand it’s a new product, but if you’re going to advertise something, you should be able to offer it to purchase. There was a spelling error in the app, which is disappointing considering this is a learning toy (height was misspelled as “hight”). As far as age appropriateness, my 5 1/2 year old liked the free play mode, but the actual coding part was a bit over his head, especially since he needed to read the prompts and he’s only in preschool, so he can’t read freely yet. Setup was fairly easy, and the app is easy to navigate. Some of the levels in the “coding classroom” were confusing to get Augie to do what it was meant to do, and the app isn’t much help to explain exactly what needs to be done to complete the task and move to the next one. The unit itself is sleek and sturdy (we have 4 kids 5 and under, so delicate things don’t last long in our house), and the display screen is small but the icons are clear and easy to see. The charger is specific to Augie, which will be annoying if it ever gets broken (most everything else in our house uses micro USB or lightning cable to charge, so we have those cords in spades). Overall, this is a fun learning toy, and I’m hoping once it’s been on the market for a little while there will be more tweaks made. I was given this product by Target in exchange for an honest review.
This toy brings IPad play to a new level. We were greatly impressed that our nine year old was able to set up the account all by herself. The instructions were easy to follow. Once the account was ready to go, the laughter started. I general dislike most games my children play on their IPad but this device is a unique exception. The games allow the kids to challenge themselves and learn new technology. I appreciate the environment gives my children the ability to learn coding in a fun and interactive way. I hope Augie allows my children to learn to appreciate technology and maybe strive to learn more.
