About this item

Armstrong surveys the life and career of underrated filmmaker Paul Bartel (1938-2000) in its entirety, beginning with a comprehensive biography that considers the ways in which personal experiences influenced his work (e.g., he was gay), and provides production histories as well. He brings attention to the strengths in the Bartel canon and aims to spur new discussion of him and his work. The eleven films he did bear the distinctive, personal mark of an artist who invariably invested his work with subversive ideas, weird characters, fey wit, and a great sense of fun. One critic, detecting the grotesque particularly in Bartel’s work from the seventies said: “Part of what made Bartel’s earlier works so charming and palatable, in spite of their raggedness, was the man’s innate urbanity. He brought an undeniable sophistication to schlock.” Through his career as a director, Bartel regularly alluded to the films of Alfred Hitchcock, replicating shots first used by Hitchcock, as well as lighting schemes, character types, visual and aural tropes. The multilingual Bartel (French and Italian), went to Italy for training as a filmmaker on a Fullbright scholarship, which brought exposure to new ideas about moviemaking and its potential use for socio-political criticism. The book is divided into three parts: the life of Paul Bartel; interviews; film and television work. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
