Q: Assuming full + direct sunlight, how many hours can the lights be on per hour of charge?

A: The length of time will depend on how much the battery is charged. Fully charging the battery requires 7-8 hours of direct sunlight exposure on the solar panel. There is an internal timer that will allow the lights to run up to 8 hours after dusk is detected.

Q: The above question asked what the output of the solar panel is, not the draw upon the battery. I measured around 6 V and 5 mA. Can you provide the actual numbers?

A: The product has changed since last year. My old one has a 3.2V, 0.8 W-hr. 250 mAh LiFePO4 battery. The new one has a 1.2V, 400 mAh Ni-MH battery. I recorded the older model's solar panel having about 6V and 8 mA, and the newer solar panel as 3V and 67 mA. The solar panel on the new version is also slightly larger.

Q: Could I wire an identical solar panel in parallel to double the current to the battery without any issues? Then it should charge in half the time, correct?

A: Thank you for asking, but please do not modify the solar lights, it is a closed, balanced system of battery, solar panel, charger and current draw to the lights. Also the charger will limit the maximum current for this system negating any extra panels. Do not add extra solar panels to this product. Thank you.

A: This item has an internal timer that will allow the lights to run up to 8 hours after dusk is detected. The length of time will depend on how much the battery is charged. Fully charging the battery requires 7-8 hours of direct sunlight exposure on the solar panel. The 8hr timer also allows extra capacity of energy in the battery to be stored in battery for the next day should the panel not be able to get enough sunlight to charge the next day, but would require recharge on day 3 again. This storage feature of extra energy is something we pioneered to allow the solar holiday sets to work on cloudy days in the winter.

Living in AZ with strong sun even in the winter, these lights are a perfect solution for my older hike with no outdoor electrical outlets. Though they are an investment, and the strands are short, the energy and light is fantastic. I will definitely stock up after Christmas if I can find any sets.

Lights are somewhat dim -- you can see them from the street, sure, but they're definitely not as bright as plug-ins. More importantly, the wires are incredibly thin and somewhat delicate! A wire broke (not a bulb, the actual wire, and it snapped, not simply pulled loose) while placing these on a fence. Fortunately a wire nut put it to rights, but yikes! At least I got these on a bit of a sale rather than full price, but I'm disappointed in Philips.

In winter, there are bound to be several cloudy days before Christmas and it doesn't help when you buy solar lights. This is our 3rd year with these lights so we've had enough experience to write this review. Last night for example after a mostly cloudy day, the lights stayed on for about 1-2 hours. That's not what most want with holiday lights. We had hoped for 5 but that's only if you have a bright sunny day. Philips would do well to add an alternative plug so when the solar power is depleted so you can plug them in. We have 6 or 7 ropes of these Philips and 1 this year that was bought at the end of last year on clearance doesn't take a charge. We've tried for several days, it's not working. We got rid of all our other lights as they were old bulbs and not efficient. Wish we still had them.

It's quite sunny where I live so I'm sure that helps, but these work great! I like the purple lights that are on string since you don't see that often on holiday lights, and not having to run out to turn them on in the freezing cold (or have a 50 foot extension cord) is super handy.

I ordered 3 sets of these for a small tree outside my house. After putting them all up, only 2 of the sets worked, but I can't take one of the strings down to return because they are all intertwined in the tree and it's been really cold! And yes, I did double check that the switch was in the "on" position :) I really like the ones that work. They're very bright and easy because I don't have to worry about turning them off and on. I even bought some of the solar net lights and they all work great. I would recommend this item, but next time I'd leave them outside to charge in the sun and see if they light up that night before I string them in a tree, just in case they didn't work.
