Q: It mentions being able to sterilize breast pump parts but I noticed it does not show the tubing in the photos. Can the tubing also be sterilized in the machine with the other parts?

submitted by ABurch34 - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello! The motor unit, silicone tube, cap and the adapter of Avent Breast Pump do not require cleaning, as they do not come into contact with breast milk. You can further check the manual about the parts of breast pumps that are cleanable: https://philips.to/2YGA3KE

Q: Do you need to wash bottles with soap and water before being steriziled or can you just rinse them in hot water then sterilize them?

submitted by NewMama - 4 years ago
  • A: YES you absolutely do need to wash the bottles before sterilization. Washing removes all the milk proteins and buildup, as well as oil from hands and other dirt. The steam sterilizer can’t do its job properly if you start with an unclean bottle!!!

The sterilizer leaks every single time I use it despite I use same or less water as it is recommended. The leak happens after steaming and the water starts concentrating. Very disappointed. I ended up throw this in the corner and bought newer model including dryer. It is obviously a design flaws as you can see the improvement in the newer model.

I felt stupid for buying this when I first opened it, it's nothing more than a hot plate with plastic cages to hold bottles, but after realizing that you don't have an open fire or a hot stove with a boiling pot of water that you have to watch, the utility of this sterilizer starts to shine. It could've been a bit cheaper, but I can't argue with economics. This is the most basic model and I think this is all you need... Pro-Tip: The metal piece that heats up the water on the main base unit does gets a bit calcification if you use tap water (I'm in the USA), just cut a few slices of lemon, squeeze the juice onto it, let it sit for a bit, then use that piece of lemon and scrub it after it sits for a while, the calcification will come right off. I use this method to avoid any chemical/soap to wash the base. Just don't dunk the thing in water since there are exposed wires/electronic timer inside the base.

Stopped working 3 months after. Exactly when the return period ended. I maintained it cleaned and used distilled cleaning method just like it said in the instructions. I should have read the reviews because it looks like many have the same issue. It just completely stops working after a short time and now I have to buy another one.

Doesn't work

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I'm making an exception for this thing, especially now that I see the price has shot up to $75 from the $40 that it was a couple weeks ago when it was gifted to me. First off, it came out of the box with a very strong chemical smell that, despite washing all of the pieces of it before using it for the first time, I could not get rid of. The instructions said to run the sterilizer empty the first time, which is what I did, and it worked just fine. Four minutes to heat up, six minutes to sterilize, and auto shut-off. One thing to note (that seems a little dangerous) is that if you push the button while the machine is unplugged, then it will turn on when you plug it in. There is no way to turn it off once the button has been depressed. THEN it was time for me to sterilize my bottles and accessories. It turned on, got warm, and got the bottles all wet, but only ran for about 60 seconds before shutting off. I have tried cleaning it and running it about four more times since then, and it does the same time every time; it will stay on for about 60 seconds and then turn off, only getting the bottles wet. To top it all off, it makes the bottles smell terrible with that same chemical smell that hasn't gone away. I have tried searching for trouble-shooting for my issue and there is nothing to be found. This was a gift, and I unfortunately lost the gift receipt so I can't return it. Save your money and buy a different brand, or a regular ol' microwave steam sterilizer, or even just boil your bottles the old fashioned way.

This is truly a life saver —from someone who used to boil baby’s bottles every day. This saves so much time and energy, and sanitizes in no time. My only complaint is the metal plate underneath does get dirty and can be kind of hard to clean

Great use of vertical space, I can fit a lot of bottles in the bottom, and then fit all the nipples broken down, plus pacifiers. For a first time mom it gave me peace of mind to know everything was sterilized for my baby. If you use tap water expect brown residue from all the impurities burning on the hot plate, clean with dilute vinegar and it takes care of it.

Love this sterilizer. Having downsized my microwave I couldn’t get the microwave sterilizer like I have used in the past. I like that fact you can sterilize 6 bottles with attachments all at one time. Prior to getting this I was having to sterilize on the stovetop (max 3 9-11oz bottles at a time and couldn’t have all parts to them).

UNSAFE design! Burn hazard!

Potential Burn Victim - 3 years ago, Verified purchaser
I consider this device to be unsafe. The design (even mentioned in the instructions) allows the 1 button on the entire device to operate when unplugged. If you accidentally hit the on/off button while cleaning or handling the machine when unplugged and then plug in the device, it automatically turns on. There is no positive detent in the push button to let you know you have in effect "ARMED" the device. The only way you will know that the device has turned on and is heating up bare metal VERY QUICKLY and VERY HOT is a tiny little light on the bottom of the unit, no sound, just a dim amber light the size of a pea. This is a complete failure in design. How on earth did this pass the engineering and safety design phase to allow a machine to heat up to well over 212 degrees F without positive user input? An iron is one thing, but I don't typically iron in the middle of the night, holding a baby and sleep deprived. I will be writing to consumer reports and other safety monitoring groups concerning this device.

Purchased this to sterilize my newborns bottles, etc. during covid-19 pandemic. Product broke in less than 3 weeks of using it and will not turn on, VERY disappointed as I need a sterilizer now more than ever. Do not recommend this product. Spend the extra money on a better rated sterilizer.
