about this item

The author explores the relationship between the literary representation of the historical, cultural, and political process of decolonization as a traumatic event and the ethics of representing it in postcolonial literature, particularly what occurs between the reader and trauma text, as well as how postcolonial trauma literature reshapes understanding of what it means to encounter a text. He analyzes pairs of South Asian and South African texts to illustrate the reader’s tactile experience with literary trauma, showing how texts are not just accounts of traumatized bodies but are themselves “bodies,” and how these texts use narrative structure to engage the reader in an aesthetic and ethical relationship. He considers the reader’s response to literary trauma in terms of trauma theory, affect theory, and phenomenology; the historical and cultural contexts of the 1947 Partition of India and apartheid in South Africa; the use of suspension and resolution as narrative techniques in Jyotirmoyee Devi’s The River Churning and J.M. Coetzee’s Age of Iron; child narration in Mark Behr’s The Smell of Apples and Bapsi Sidhwa’s Cracking India; and the refusal to provide closure in Achmat Dangor’s Bitter Fruit and Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost. He ends with brief discussion of Caribbean literature about Haitian trauma, including works by Edwidge Danticat. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
