About this item

This book examines role-playing games in terms of their form, content, and context, as an example of a postmodern cultural practice, and explores the link between the rise of postmodern theory and the emergence of this new medium. It looks at player agency and the nature of the medium, the localization of the “author” in the collective experience, the connections extending from a single given text, and the social web of participants and how discursive power is distributed; what kinds of stories role-playing games tell and why, whether the orientation toward religion, mythology, mysticism, and magic is a hint to non-religious ritual function underlying the entertainment aspect, and whether this reflection of the values and norms of societies leads to a new understanding of what society can be; and whether role-playing games are a symptom of a fundamental change in the culture of meaning-making in societies or whether it only provides virtual spaces. It discusses core concepts and theoretical aspects of postmodernism as a framework for studying role-playing games; theories of play and games; the definition and procedural and collective process of narrative creation in role-playing games; their origins and development; dominant schools of role-playing game theory that originated with practitioners (the Threefold Model, the Big Model, and the Process Model); critical approaches to the medium; alternative theoretical perspectives from cultural anthropology, postcolonial studies, and economics; and the connection between the medium and postmodernism.
