Practical Leadership Skills for Safety Professionals and Project Engineers (Hardcover) (Ph.D. Gary L.
About this item
Winn shares three observations that underscore the need for a practical book on the art and science of leadership and leader development: 1) the lack of knowledge of basic office protocol and etiquette among Millennials who are more siloed and less global; 2) there is a disparity between the communication, ethics and leadership skills taught to engineering students and what industry expects students to know; 3) if upper management is not interested in developing leaders in house, leader-trainees should take the initiative and choose a code of behavior supported by values using a bottom-up approach for changing the culture. Winn’s experience and data suggests that both graduate and undergraduates in the fields of safety and project engineering could be better prepared for the “big time” not only in terms of professional development, but also in terms of being ready to be a leader and to develop their own pipeline of subordinate leaders. He presents anecdotes from real industry, worksites, and people. Targeting college students and early-career professionals, his goal is to blend research on leadership with wisdom and anecdotes aimed at young engineers and safety professionals.
