About this item

Praxagoras was a practicing physician during the late fourth and early third centuries BC who wrote a number of medical treatises and taught and trained several students, some of whom became renowned in their own right, says Lewis. His works were still available in the second and maybe even fourth centuries AD, but the fragments that survive in quotes and references by other writers can offer a window into his diagnostic and therapeutic methods and practices, and into his anatomical, physiological, and pathological theories. She reconstructs his doctrines on the arteries, pulse, and pneuma and seeks to identify his role in the history of ancient medical and philosophical ideas on vascular anatomy and physiology, as well as the history of the concept of pneuma and soul.
