about this item

Caravale examines how the Roman Catholic Church sought to force preachers to preach against the Lutheran heresy and demand that members of their congregations profess specifically Catholic teachings. He focuses the 1540s, but sets that decade within the larger period (1530-65) during which Rome gradually imposed its grip on society by exerting increasingly close control over the circulation of heterodox ideas and doctrines on the Italian peninsula. In order to win the battle against the Protestant heresy and heterodox preaching, he says, religious dissent was absorbed within a substantial Counter-Reformation project.
