About this item

Weinstein offers this book dealing with the impact of prenatal and perinatal experiences on a baby's later life and psychology. The first several chapters frame the motivation for the book as well introduce a founding figure of prenatal and perinatal psychology (PPN), Michel Odent, and outline the multiple disciplines it draws upon including developmental psychology, neuroscience, attachment theory, traumatology, and epigenetics. The book then begins by establishing a basis for maternal experience during pregnancy to affect her endocrine and immune systems and thereby the uterine environment, as well as the influence of even pre-pregnancy life experience on reproductive hormonal function. The focus is then shifted to prenatal development, covering the modulation of sensory systems and the autonomic nervous system. Epigenetics is discussed with particular attention to trauma, both objectively traumatic stressors experienced during pregnancy and PTSD from earlier events. As the book winds down it discusses sources of stress directly related to pregnancy including the emotional impact of miscarriage or abortion on later healthy pregnancies and complications associated with assisted reproductive technologies. The final chapter ties together the various threads to offer suggestions for social policy and clinical practice to provide women and babies with support. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to additional resources, illustrations, and references. Annotation ©2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
