Description
All sorts of gruesome deaths await you and the rest of your wagon party in this official multi-player card game version of the classic computer game. To win, you'll need to keep one player alive all the way from Independence, MO to the Willamette Valley. But between rattlesnakes, starvation, dead oxen, broken bones, dysentery, and a host of other calamities, the odds are long...almost as long as the Oregon Trail itself. Players work together to move along the trail, fording rivers and playing Supply Cards to overcome calamities. Be warned - there will be times when it makes sense to let one of your wagon mates succumb to a calamity rather than expend precious supplies. Every time players go the way of all flesh, you'll flip over the roster card and write their names on tombstones (don't forget to include a quick epitaph). It's a great way to relive your fond memories of one of the world's most beloved computer games and to kill off your family and friends at the same time. Available only at Target. For 2-6 players, ages 12 and up.

This game almost completely lacks strategy. Almost every single part of the game is just luck of the draw. You place trail cards and eventually you'll have to place trail cards which will make you draw a calamity card that will either cause you to roll a die or lose resources or just lose resources. If you can't lose resources then you pick a friend and lose their resources randomly. There are even cards that can make you die instantly with no way at all to prevent it. You could even draw the card that causes you to die instantly on your first turn. There's almost no way to plan or think about what might be coming up. You don't get many resource cards in your hand, you don't get to choose which resources you start with, and if you don't have the right resource at the right time then you lose the game. There are times where you'll get to choose a few new resource cards but there's no clue about which calamity you might be facing next so it is 100% luck whether you live or die for another round. This game is not fun. It basically states in the rules that you're probably going to lose, which is true to the old video game. It sounds like it would be worth a laugh but isn't actually fun to lose this game. When you're done it'll just feel like a waste of your time. The directions for this game are at once too long and also not specific or clear enough.

This game is designed poorly, it’s not fun simply because of its design. It needs so much more to the gameplay, it’s honestly boring…

Can’t Even Play

We just opened this game after receiving around Christmas as a White Elephant Gift and our Dice is pitch black. It’s unusable. I tried to contact Pressman (the company on the box) but even though the game is featured on their site when I’m trying to contact them it does not come up in their scroll down selection so I can’t even contact them. A little disappointed.

Bought for the fun nostalgia, that's about all its good for. Instructions aren't very well written and starts off a confusing game. We're going to need to make our own instructions to have fun with it. Save your money for another card game!

Unfortunately, this game conflates random player elimination with fun. What works in the computer game doesn't come across in this 'draw cards till you die' one-shot experience. In the modern game design space, this is somehow the worst board game I've played out of hundreds in the past 15 years.

There are almost no decisions to make in this game. This is a half-step up from Candyland, a game which plays itself.

Well just for the laugh and nostalgic factor it was good but actually playing the game as is- it was terrible. The game makers seemed to make so the point was that you would all die suddenly (and hopefully laugh about it). We made a few of our own adjustments to the rules to make it make more sense/ more winnable and it was a bit more fun.

My youngest picked this game out. Of course she never had the pleasure of playing it "back in the day", so she didn't know exactly what it was. My kids are 13, 14 and 17 and they all love it. I have told a few friends about it as well.

We love this game!! It’s not as hard to survive as the instructions make it seem.. just takes some strategy and teamwork! Easy to set up and play, and it didn’t take long at all to learn how to play. Not quite the same as the online version from growing up but more fun as it’s multiplayer. You definitely have to work as a team to survive!

Ambiguous instructions

Sbix - 3 years ago
The makers of this game put very little thought into it. They capitalized off of the nostalgia factor and called it a day. The instructions are a joke and the instructional videos are even worse.
