about this item

Scottish born Thom (1802-90) was editor-in-chief of the Montreal Herald from 1835 to 1838, and among his writings was his Anti- Gallic Letters series, which ran from September 1835 to January 1836, and argued for eliminating the French presence and influence in Quebec. Desschamps presents an edition of the letters and explains how they, and Thom were instrumental in establishing the political and philosophical foundations for what would become the Dominion of Canada.
