A:Â Thank you for your inquiry Jasmine. The indicator in the unit is based on both time and the amount of water that has passed through the filter. The filters are rated for up to 3 months of use or up to 100 gallons of filtered water, whichever comes first, and the light will change based on the time and usage of the filter. It is fairly accurate with minimal variance. The reason the light will be green with a used filter is because the reset mechanism only registers when a filter has been put into the unit. It does not know if the filter is new or old. Please do not remove an old filter and reinstall it to get a green light, as the filter has already been used.
