about this item

Based on an international and interdisciplinary joint project that began in 2004, Kato and Iwasaki selected Rashda as one of the villages to be surveyed in the framework of a joint research project on Egypt’s socio-economy. Most of the analyses and descriptions are based on data and information collected before the January 25 Revolution of 2011. Lying in a peripheral desert region far from Cairo, Rashda, since the revolution, has seen considerable development, with old houses in the old area of the village being demolished and many houses and shops being built. Despite changes in the landscape, the social structure of the village life was not able to change easily after the revolution. The book aims to provide a comprehensive description of Rashda, a village in the Dakhla Oasis, as a society based on underground water, from its beginnings to the present. Key concepts are the uncertainty of the water supply, the dependence on the political regime, and the rational behavior of individuals. Fourteen chapters with conclusion are divided into four parts: Part I (Dakhla Oasis) deals with the region of Dakhla Oasis to examine the natural and human circumstances. Part 2 (Rashda in history) reconstructs the history of Rashda, a village formed in the nineteenth century from local documents. Part 3 (Rashda today) makes a full examination of the features of Rashda today as a community. Part 4 (community in Well No. 3 irrigation district) is a case study of Rashda as a community.
