Absolute garbage if I could give it zero stars I could. Super messy, requires a lot of adult supervision, the candy provided was minimal and hardly melted. Tried actual melting chocolate to see if it would perform better and it wasn't much better. Total waste of time and money would have been better off buying melting chocolates and using piping bags.

Remove tip before drawing chocolate in
4 out of 5 stars
Meghan A - 10 months ago
To suck up the chocolate, you need to take the white tip off first - this is shown in the instructions but we overlooked it. Otherwise there's no suction. Once we figured this out it worked fine. Messy, but a fun activity.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really loved the concept idea of this product however it just sadly didn’t meet the expectations. I like to do different things in the kitchen and get the kids involved figured this would be a fun learning experience with making treats. There was issues with it clumping, it also kept getting stuck. It just would not work properly. I went over the instructions prior so I knew I was doing everything correctly to prepare for it. It seemed when we got somewhat of trying to make a design we barely could attempt it before getting close to halfway finishing the design and pen would have issues. Pros: Nice Product Idea Cons: Clumping issues, wants to get stuck

No warming tray

The chocolate hardened before my daughter could even start drawing with the pen. I’m a little irritated that the picture shows it comes with a warming tray. Ours didn’t and I just bought the same thing as a gift for my daughters friend 2 weeks ago and it had a warming tray. Now I have an upset daughter because her friend could do it and she couldn’t. I’m going to take a chance & order another. Idk if I possibly got an old or newer one and it doesn’t come with the tray anymore? You can see the difference in my photo on the bottom right compared to the photo advertised.

Pen doesn't work

The pen didn't work! This is my 1st review on Target.com but I had to do it. After placing batteries in the pen, we heard the clicking, but it wasn't getting the chocolate/confectionery icing. Tried several times to the point it wasted time and the icing started to solidify. I remember 10 years ago my little cousin wanted one too for Christmas and I believe it didn't work then either. DONT BUY. My 7yo was not happy. Luckily she bakes with me and I have all the baking utensils she could use instead with the kit.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this chocolate pen for my children and loved the idea they could do this. The melting tray works great and didn't take more than 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. I couldn't get the pen to suck up the chocolate I followed the instructions.

My child received this for a birthday gift. Like most other “non promotional” reviews, it’s terrible. Getting the chocolate to go in the pen was difficult, it is impossible to get it out neatly. In theory it looks fun, in reality it’s just not a good product.

Cute idea but doesn’t work. Warming gray doesn’t warm, chocolate doesn’t melt right, pen gets jammed because of those two reasons and kids get disappointed. Save your money.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This chocolate pen was kind of fun. My daughter enjoyed making different things with it. It took some time to get used to using it, but once we got going it wasn’t too bad. I think this would be best for kids 10+ years old. I received this for free in exchange for my opinion.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I finally received The Real Cooking chocolate pen and it was fun to use! My son and I made all kinds of fun things. The molds that came with the pen were really fun to use and there were so many to try! The chocolate stayed warm and smooth in the container and was really easy to load into the pen. Overall it was very easy to use! The chocolate tasted really good as well. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with kids or someone who wants an easy way to decorate cakes, cookies and anything sweet!

First think that turned me off was having to use a screwdriver so I can add batteries to it. Then suction was poor plus not nearly enough chocolate is included for it to push with air pockets and ‘sputtering’. Also doesn’t allow for precision tip is too wide.

Fun to use for adults and older kids

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] For the price I think this is a great deal. The starter kit comes with 4 different colored chocolates to be melted then stored in the warming tray. It also contains 2 sets of plastic molds with AWESOME designs. The warming tray will need to be plugged in. Make sure you have an USB to wall adapter. Your cell phone charger will PROBABLY work. The chocolate in the kit looked pretty old but melted just fine with the warm water method mentioned in the directions. The 4pks provided are not enough to fill every mold so just pick the ones you want before you start. I was impressed how well the warming tray worked. Our chocolate never hardened in the tray. Following the directions was pretty easy for filling the pen and turning it on and off. Definitely would need an adult or older teen to help. My daughter is only 6 and this wasn’t a great craft project for her. She did help pick out the colors we used but this wasn’t good for her to do on her own. Very happy with the plunger mechanism used to push the chocolate out. It really cut back on waste. All the parts are easy to clean with warm water. Highly recommend using a straw brush to clean the opening of the pen. Don’t be discouraged when your candies don’t look like the pictures on the box. Lol. I used a toothpick the best I could to fill in the tiny details on the mold before using the pen to fill in large areas. Using the pen freehand could take some practice but was pretty fun and easy. Use a template under the wax paper for better results. All in all cool to have. Would make great chocolate treats for a birthday or spring party. But not realistic for a younger child to use without constant help. I would put the starting age at around 12.
