about this item
A provocative response to the idea of the teacher as a ‘fellow learner," this book argues quite simply that teaching matters for education. Internationally renowned-philosopher Gert Biesta argues against a purely learner-centric notion of education that diminishes the role of good teaching. He proposes instead a world-centered approach to teaching which challenges students to exist in the world in a more sophisticated way. With a strong focus on the subject-ness of the student, Biesta’s conception of teaching allows students to engage with otherness in a genuine way and rejects the idea that learning can only be achieved through subjective interpretation and meaning-making.
