About this item

This ethnography examines hip-hop performances in Cape Town, South Africa, and how multilingual participants in the culture create new multilingual spaces by “remixing” language varieties like African American English, South African Englishes, Kaaps, and local registers like Sabela and Tsotsitaal to navigate local spaces and hip-hop activities and interactions. It demonstrates how remixing consists of using, combining, and manipulating multilingual forms and functions connected to histories, cultural acts, and identities to create new ways of doing multilingualism, as well as to establish new forms of meaning-making and new linguistic possibilities. It shows how these speakers use hip-hop culture to highlight issues related to marginalized voices; address problems of language, identity, and culture originating in the apartheid past; deal with current problems of social transformation in South Africa; and extend across national and other diasporic boundaries to express solidarity with other marginalized groups. It discusses the importance of space in multilingualism research and studies on it, the ethnographic context of a night club and other spaces in Cape Town, the intertextuality of the rap braggadocio genre performed by emcees, the processes of entextualization in freestyle rap battles, the articulation of masculine ideology in freestyle rap performances, and femininity and participation by women.
