About this item

This study employs linguistic and historical perspectives to examine a manuscript by St. Birgitta, held in the Swedish National Archives. The first part of the book gives background on St. Birgitta and her writings, her personal and family connections with Norway, and the Birgittine movement in Norway and Munkeliv. This section also offers a textual history of vernacular Scandinavian manuscripts and a summary of previous research into the St. Birgitta manuscript. This is followed by a description of the manuscript and what is known about it. Subsequent chapters explore language issues in the manuscript, touching on foreign influences, dialectical forms, and language mixture in medieval Scandinavian manuscripts. The last part of the book presents a translation of the manuscript with commentary. The book is illustrated with b&w photos of manuscript pages and color charts.
