about this item

Several of Ascham's (1515/16-68) English works are well known to scholars of English history and literature, says Nicholas, but his theological works in Latin have received little scholarly attention. She presents the first English translation of "A Defence of the Lord's Supper" (Apologia pro Caena Dominica), which he wrote in Cambridge during 1547-48 during the first year of Edward VI's reign. It did not appear under his name, however, until 30 years later, 10 years after he died. The tract comprises a bold attack on the Mass, the sacrifice and massing of priests, and demands the restoration of a purified and scripturally faithful Lord's Supper in which everyone can participate in a more meaningful way. She expects Brill to publish her accompanying study of the tract soon. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
